A Safety Data Sheet (SDS), formerly known as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), is a document that provides information on the properties of hazardous chemicals and how they can affect health and safety in the workplace. It is an essential resource for managing chemical risks in the workplace. The format and specific content of an SDS can vary by country due to differing regulations, but the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals has standardized the format to some extent.

Here is a typical outline of the sections found in a Safety Data Sheet:

  1. Identification

    • Product identifier (name)
    • Recommended use and restrictions on use
    • Supplier details (including address, phone number)
    • Emergency phone number
  2. Hazard(s) Identification

    • Classification of the chemical (health, physical and environmental hazards)
    • Label elements, including hazard symbols, signal words, and hazard statements
    • Other hazards (e.g., dust explosion hazard) that do not result in classification
  3. Composition/Information on Ingredients

    • Chemical identity
    • Common names and synonyms
    • CAS number and other unique identifiers
    • Impurities and stabilizing additives which are themselves classified and which contribute to the classification of the chemical
  4. First-Aid Measures

    • Necessary first-aid instructions by route of exposure (inhalation, skin and eye contact, ingestion)
    • Description of the most important symptoms or effects, and any symptoms that are acute or delayed
    • Recommendations for immediate medical care and special treatment needed, if any
  5. Fire-Fighting Measures

    • Suitable (and unsuitable) extinguishing techniques and equipment
    • Chemical hazards from fire
    • Equipment for firefighters (including personal protective equipment)
  6. Accidental Release Measures

    • Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures
    • Environmental precautions
    • Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up
  7. Handling and Storage

    • Precautions for safe handling
    • Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
  8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

    • Occupational exposure limits
    • Recommended monitoring procedures
    • Appropriate engineering controls
    • Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment (PPE)
  9. Physical and Chemical Properties

    • Basic physical and chemical properties such as appearance, odor, pH, boiling point, flash point, etc.
  10. Stability and Reactivity

    • Chemical stability
    • Possibility of hazardous reactions
    • Conditions to avoid (e.g., static discharge, shock, or vibration)
    • Incompatible materials
    • Hazardous decomposition products
  11. Toxicological Information

    • Information on the likely routes of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, skin and eye contact)
    • Symptoms related to the physical, chemical and toxicological characteristics
    • Delayed and immediate effects as well as chronic effects from short and long-term exposure
    • Numerical measures of toxicity
  12. Ecological Information

    • Toxicity to fish, algae, and bacteria (e.g., LC50, EC50)
    • Persistence and degradability
    • Bioaccumulative potential
    • Mobility in soil
    • Other adverse effects
  13. Disposal Considerations

    • Information on safe disposal practices
    • Environmental precautions
  14. Transport Information

    • UN number and proper shipping name
    • Transport hazard class(es)
    • Packing group, if applicable
    • Environmental hazards (e.g., Marine pollutant (Yes/No))
    • Transport in bulk according to Annex II of MARPOL 73/78 and the IBC Code
  15. Regulatory Information

    • Safety, health, and environmental regulations specific for the product in question
  16. Other Information

    • Date of the latest revision of the SDS
    • Further information not provided in other sections

This standardized format ensures that the same essential safety information is available, in an accessible form, wherever chemicals are used.
